Gamasutra's Top 5 PC Games of 2009

Yeah, it doesn't really mean anything, but here's the list anyway:

5. Torchlight (Runic Games)

4. Empire: Total War (The Creative Assembly)

3. Left 4 Dead 2 (Valve)

2. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II (Relic Entertainment)

1. Dragon Age: Origins (BioWare)

And then there's this encouraging thought:
Finally, it's worth pointing out the originality on display this year; of the 15 games highlighted here, more than half hail from newly-created properties. And take heart, PC fans: nearly all had PC as the lead development platform, with the majority exclusive.

    VOMIT.

    What a crock of shit.
That's like saying former President Bush had a 99% approval rating.
Yep, seriously I did a true stratified random sampling of people from all over the world, and 99 out of 100 agreed he was better than the alternative. Which gives him a 99% approval rating.

What I'm not revealing in my statistical data, is the phrase I used during sampling. (This happens everyday)

Caller : " Would you rather have President George W. Bush or Adolf Hitler leading your Nation?"
Polled : "Well, I ^%@$#ing hate him, but sure Bush"
    Caller : "thanks."

    Hangs up.

Data recorded - Interviewed random voter, they highly valued president Bush's leadership.

    WTF ? Dragon Age ? ? ? Are you kidding me ?????

  3. Currently, Steaming Pile of Shit is offering all of these games for Download.
    Steam for short.

By the way, for those of you who have been fan-boys of SteamingPileOfShit, I hope you realize what they are doing to the PC gaming marketplace.

As Remmy would say - "It Ain't Gooood"

Game makers like to make huge profits.
We like to play great games.
Steam - is in the #*^!&#^%*%^#*^@ way.

    Wave of the future ?
    Sure buddy ....

    it's the wave of shit

    Steaming shit.

Shittier games, for cheaper money !
Sounds like a Dutchman's heaven on Earth.
Platforms - if you will are used for development based upon the marketability of the products.
4100 Walmart stores = Game Producer's best friend.
Gamestop, FYE, Target and Kmart all carry major releases for PC gamers.
    However,
SteamingPileOfDogShit is causing worldwide ripples with it's 20 million #&*^@&%@holes subscribing and purchasing their games online.
    Congratulations Steamers.
This ain't no conspiracy theory Steamers, this is something CEO's are working to resolve. Developers are forced to consult with SteamingPileOfHorseshit.com to investigate the potential of possible releases.
Wow... No wonder everything gets release for SexBox360 and POS 3

  4. So simple delivery system which makes the game costs more, because with the lack of box, manual, box art, and all that shit and thus leads to crapper games. I don't see the logic my man. I think this was Hitler's real final solution. I love you Steve, but acid and blogging does not mix. I will jump back in to WoW in a few weeks so you don't have to miss me and blame steam.

  5. Blowing some "steam" off Steve? LOL!

  6. *** WARNING - LONG POST AHEAD ***

Ok, that was a lot to take in. I'm gonna try to recap just to make sure I understood everything correctly.

"Hey everyone. You should all play WoW because it's the greatest game ever. Seriously, it has elves and giant cow-people. Also, you guys should stop using Steam. I refuse to use it because they don't sell WoW and there's a distinct lack of cartoonish undead and druid-fairies on their website. Anyways, their online delivery system, marketing of small independent developers, and running discounts on games is ruining the game economy. What everyone should do is go to your local Best Buy, drop $20 for WoW, $30 for Burning Crusade, and $40 for Lich King. Oh, you didn't actually want to play any of those games you just dropped $90 on, did you? If you do, you'll also want to pick up the $30 game card. That will let you have fun for the next 60 days. Then it's as easy as going back to best buy and buying another game card (No cheating and buying an online game card. DEATH TO DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION!!). Oh, and the 360 and PS3 suck too because their games don't have any gnomes."

    Was that pretty close? :)

Seriously though, as far as the game marketplace goes, digital distribution has done great things. In the past year, I've bought between 5-10 really good games by small developers that all cost less than $15 (Go buy Braid now. Awesome game). Some were on the PC, some on the PS3, but I can guarantee I wouldn't have bought any of those games at Best Buy or Gamestop, mainly because small developers with sub-$50 games don't get any shelf space there.

This question goes out to all serious WoW players...how many games have you purchased in the last year that weren't produced by big-name game companies? Even if big-name labels were included, how much did you contribute to the gaming market on non-WoW subscription fees?

I firmly believe that the best way to promote a healthy gaming market is by supporting the developers who make good/innovative games and not buying mediocre games just because they have the CoD/WoW/Halo/etc. brand on them.

If you're a fan of WoW, then by all means, support them. But if you're a fan of games in general, pull out your wallet and show some support. Games like Mirrors Edge, Portal, Braid, Borderlands, and even L4D are all good games because they did something that no other game had done before. They may have had their issues, but they innovated. And that's worth supporting. However, if I'm still playing L4D6 and CoD12 ten years from now, I'm going to be pissed.

    ---------------

    Somewhat unrelated:
I also think that's why you'll hear people say "I miss the old CoD1/Halo1/Goldeneye days". They were new and innovative then. I imagine when we're playing L4D4, someone's gonna say "I miss the old L4D days."

  7. This is why I like Steam:

I got Borderlands and Left 4 Dead 2 through Steam, both of them at less than I would have paid at retail.

I had to get Killing Floor, Defense Alliance 2 (free with KF), Garry's Mod and Torchlight through Steam, because none of brick-and-mortar retailers around me sell indie games. All of those games cost me between $5 and $20.

I had to get the first three CoD games, Painkiller, and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory through Steam, because I lost my CD keys to those games, and they're too old to find at retail.

I picked up GRID on Steam, because you can't find it in stores anymore, and it was only 8 bucks.

I got Far Cry on Steam, because a friend sent it to me.

I've bought games for several of my friends on Steam, because the games were instantly available, cheaper, and there was no shipping cost.

When I bought the Orange Box at retail two years ago, I was able to send Half-Life 2 and HL2: Episode One to a friend for free, because I had bought those games previously.

All Steam games update update automatically, none of them charge subscription fees, and Valve supports its games for years after release at no additional cost.

Steam is the one thing that has kept IT( )E going since we all got burnt out on Call of Duty.

  8. All joking aside, you guys are like a bunch of Christians on the Crusades, completely oblivious .... and so convinced your cause is the right one ! lol ROFL OMG :)

It's fun to trade words back and forth :) Some can do it, some can't.... (maugchief you should try to avoid attempts at humor)

The PC Gaming Market will continue to slide.
You can contribute to Steaming Pile of Dogshit all you like.
It's sad to see you all so confused... lol
Look fellas, I didn't invent greed, I'm not responsible for our current marketplace, and I can't help you to understand why digital distribution is bad. Frisky, it's not about the cartons and it's not about me playing wow either.
It's about merchants, businessmen, retailers, publishers, distributors, freight companies, carton manufacturers, label makers, printing houses, advertisers, and so many many other things. Steamers - have fun creating your own giant shitter and flushing yourselves down it.

    Messiah - you know better.
    Steamer.
