WOW Affecting PC Game sales ?

Recently, Read an article in a magazine (I'm too lazy to get specific and have to quote the source)
that discussed the link between MMORGS and PC game Sales.
I think to myself : " All my friends who are opposed to trying WOW use the argument that they hate playing a game with a monthly fee"
Since I began playing WOW in September, I have spent roughly 175 bucks on the game including all the expansions and monthly fees. I'm paid thru August of this year. When you refer a friend you get free gametime, and there are perks to playing with friends in WOW that involve leveling your characters. The game presents as much or more challenge for me now in my Ninth Month of gameplay. I have been focusing on 1 character and still have a long ways to go, since Matty and I spend so much time doing PVP (player vs. Player)
Even at the bargain price of 30 bucks per game, I would still have purchased at least 4 or 5 games for my PC in this time...
What's the biggest objection to World of Warcraft ? I'm curious to know what all you pussies are afraid of.

  1. I bought the Orange Box in November 2007 for $50. It came with Half-Life 2, HL2 Episode 1, HL2 Episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2. I got the SDK for free.

Between the time I've spent playing those five games and screwing around with the map editor, I've easily gotten over 500 hours out of my investment in the last 19 months. And that's a conservative estimate.

  2. Let's not forget : Farcry 2, Call of Duty World at War, and god know whatever other games you have bought ? If you're going to respond, you have to be honest and Candid !
I know that you have invested hundreds in games, because like Frisky, I have been the benefactor of your budget on occaison :)
I remember pissing away 50 bucks on COD2... huge waste of money. Then 50 Bucks on COD4 ... not so bad, at least we had fun for a while ! :) Making maps was as much fun as playing COD4 I think.

I doubt your argument will really hold up - meaning, a monthly fee of 11 bucks is a small price to pay for the ever evolving gaming experience you'll receive.
    Pussy.

  3. It's not that I haven't played other games; I have. The point is that a one-time investment, by itself, got me the same degree of entertainment you're getting with a subcription. Not to mention the fact I don't want to see a subscription-based system move into the FPS genre of online games. It may be inevitable, but I refuse to support it.

In any event, the subscription fees are only a secondary reason that I don't play WoW. My primary reason is that game just doesn't interest me. The only fantasy-type game I've ever played is Oblivion, and that's not even in my top 5 or 10 all-time games.

  4. BTW: I admit that I've wasted a lot of money on CoD ... on CoD2 and CoD5 in particular. I wrote a whole blog post on it, as a matter of fact ("Slowly up the learning curve").

  5. Admittedly, I can recall laughing at the prospect of playing anything that even resembled wow. I am quite certain I ridiculed Jimbo and AFSB for moving to wow, so I can understand how you must feel. Subscription supported games are not going to be good for developers in the future. In my opinion, there have been some really good games that never made the cut, that should have. Many Developers have spent huge amounts of resources over the past few years trying to Unseat Blizzard from their perch. All of that R&D Should have gone into making a squad tactic based game similar to TF2, without all the homosexual looking characters and maps. TF has a seemingly random, almost spastic nature about it that makes me ill when I try to play it. Where is the Immersion factor in these games ? I want a game that makes me hold my breath for a moment while I try to kill another player ... something that is at least a little exciting.
Remember that steeple map in CODUO ? Where the tunnels went under the map for a ways, and you had to assault the hill ? Playing the version with the ticking bomb was always my favorite. Very exciting and never boring ! 2 Players or 20, that held my attention every round, and produced the most opportunities for surprise of any maps I can recall.
That's what I get from wow when I play .... and that's why I tolerate the character models and all the stupidity that surrounds much of the game. However, I do realize that not everyone is as skilled as me ... (hint hint Frisky sucks)
At any rate, it's been fun to listen to you cry about why you're not capable of playing wow !
    LOL
Just kidding, thanks for replying to my boring post ! LOL :)

  6. BTW - Not everyone can get 500 hours of enjoyment out of the Orange Box ... some peeps get bored after 18 or 20 hours. It takes a special kind of freaky to play a single player game for that long... but then we all know you're very special :)

  8. I just wrote a dang page long response to Mr. DOA and IE crapped out. So I am going to paraphrase here.
Yes I suck at wow I will cry myself to sleep tonight, because im a giant failure.
I think wow was an OK game, however the deal breaker for me was "ALONE, ALONE, Hey there is DOA oh hes busy Hey theres Swatter cant get to where he is. Welp another day of questing Alone."
and im not blaming you DOA for being busy it was just boring to me. I can play L4D and play the whole time with all my friends and not have to worry about progress or builds or invest some much time just to "play" the game. I was basically playing to play, but i lost interest and stayed with the games where I could just play. (Wow and this is paraphrasing)
TF2 is extremely humorous and I think it is less about "immersion factor" for me and I think for every else and more of just a fun and hilorious game to play and be laughing extremely hard at while we play.
I understand your point of view - Where you want a good game and you dismiss the argument of "well you have to pay monthly", because who cares if your having fun and I agree if you can afford to and your having fun then who gives a crap about a petty 15 bucks. However I think TF2 and L4D are great games and I would even settle for a less then good game if I could play with some great guys every night. Hell I would play scrabble every night as long as I could hear plucky laugh and scott yell at plucky for making up words and getting triple word scores for it. "Are you F****** me? Grabatit isnt even a word Plucky!!!" So ya I mean hell you playing cod4 some times was influenced strongly because that the ITOE gusy were playing it even though your issues with the gameplay and connection problems. There were some nights I dont know how you sat in the game with the amount of lag you had on ya. I think now you just want to play a game for you that fits you and I think thats great, but that game i feel kinda stinks in that if your not 80 you have to play parallel to your friends to keep up and play with them
So yup yup oh and SCREW OFF YA WOW TARD!! lol :p

  9. BTW - Good Discussion Topic
I love this blog. I think scott should just do video postings from now on and steve if you make a video post please put pants on and dont be drunk. Jimbo is still scared from that shit. I think I might do the first video post and do the autobiography of the Wabbit: The player behind the looks, and skills, and smarts, and kindness, and brillances, and awesome spelling, punctuation, and word selection. Just thinking about it is making me livid.

  10. OK Before I forget, the only reason you want to do a video post Wabbit ... is because you don't have to spell :)
Secondly, that was the best string of words and quasi sentences you have ever put together ... I laughed so hard I honestly am in a bit of pain at the moment.
I agree with you about playing any game "solo" Not fun at all.
I completely agree with you about playing a game with Plucky and Scotty and Gary and Jimboy .... that would make any game fun. :)
However, I am not going to buy LFD ( I think it's just a disgusting game ) and I've tried TF2 and it makes me sea sick.
I will however, play TF2 if my connection allows ... just to hear you guys laugh etc.

Our LIttle Boy is growing up Plucky ! He wrote such a beautiful letter about being alone.
    :)
