Goodbye, ATI

Advanced Micro Devices on Monday said it will remove the ATI name from its products by the end of the year, killing a brand name synonymous with graphics enthusiasts for 25 years.

AMD offers a range of graphics products under the ATI brand, including the Radeon, FirePro and Eyefinity offerings. The chip designer will instead attach the name AMD to those products by the end of the year, said Drew Erskine, an AMD spokesman.

The change in brand name won't affect the company's graphics product offerings or plans, Erskine said.

  1. The problem is that AMD has been slipping for the past 6 years as a CPU manufacturer. That's why the ATI acquisition 4 years ago in my opinion. Have you actually tried to buy a motherboard based on AMD chips lately? Not easy to do.

I think AMD was smart enough to see the writing on the wall and try to reinvent themselves before they imploded. I will stick with my nVidia cards for now.

  2. I'll stick with nVidia as well, but it would be nice if they'd release a DX11 card that isn't such an over-priced, under-performing power hog.
